Chevy Silverado 1500 – Silverado Gas Mileage – Repair History – Silverado Accessories – Buying A Chevy – About Us
History has given us some really strong automatic transmissions that hold up well in off road conditions. From the Turbo 400's of the 60's and 70's, the 700R4 of the 70's and 80's, to the bulletproof 4L80E of the 90's and now the 6 speed version, the 6L80E introduced in late 2005 are again dominating the terrain with tried and proven toughness from these excellent Chevy off road ready transmissions.
Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Toyota and Nissan too all make some very capable off road transmissions these days but it's the new 6L80E that's making all the waves. With already one of the most dependable transmissions on the market, Chevy has upped the stakes by adding two more gears to a strong and proven tranny. Now we have a new transmission for building our off road trucks around. Will it be as good as the 4L80E? We think it will be even better. Take just one look at the gear ratios below and you immediately see the possibilities brewing.
The 6L80E transmissions are more durable and reliable then ever before so you can head off into the mud and not have to worry about a transmission failure from weak or under-engineered parts. With six forward gears along with the ability to custom program the shift points and shift firmness, there is ample room for customizing the programming to improved acceleration & fuel economy at cruising speeds. Add in the manual shifting included on the transmission gear selector and this is one easy transmission to customize.

NEXT: Installing 4.56 or 4.11 gears in a Chevy Silverado 1500.
We used the Hypertech speedometer calibrator to correct for the change from the stock 3.08 gears to the new 3.73 gearing and the 33" tires. This was as simple as plugging the programmer into the trucks vehicle diagnostic connector and following the simple instructions on the programmer screen. We chose the new settings and updated the onboard computer. About 5 minutes after opening the box the complete process was complete and everything was as hoped.
Conclusion: The 4L60E and 6L80E have been carefully developed and thoroughly proven by extensive testing with outstanding reviews for performance and durability. Of these findings we must agree, these are proven off road transmissions and worthy of all the hype.
